Child's Pose

When I was a child I would sleep all curled up with my butt in the air. I never knew why. I only knew that it brought me comfort from the swirl of rage and pain and fear that surrounded me.

On my bed crouched low and butt high was as close as I could come to heaven.

I staggered into my first yoga class maybe 10 years ago overweight, out of shape and self-conscious. No way could I pull and contort and bounce and rise then gracefully Namaste with the best of them. I was in the back of the line struggling to do a single pose with equanimity.

No comparisons, only love.

Then my teacher called out for Child's Pose. Forehead to the ground. Knees curled under. Butt high in the air.

Bliss.
